A Community Working Together

Choir

St John’s Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, and sings for the 10 am Sunday Parish Communion, for occasional Evensongs and on special occasions. We practise most Thursday evenings at 7.30 pm. We are keen to recruit new members in any part (Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses) and both adults and children. More details from Simon Patrick

Gospel Choir

St John’s Gospel Choir sings once a month at the 10am Communion service and at special events in church and in the community. We practise on Saturday mornings at 11 am. If you enjoy singing or you play an instrument, you’d be very welcome to join us. For more information, please contact Doris Duesbury through the church office.

Flower Team

The Flower Team arranges flowers and other seasonal decorations in the Church. For more information, please contact Jill Polkinghorne through the church office.

Guild of St John

Members of the guild help keep the Church clean by washing linen, dusting and polishing. For more details, please contact Claire Cook or Vicki Swinchatt through the church office.

Open Church

We would like to keep the doors of the church open throughout the week. Church members working in pairs are currently present on Fridays between 12 noon and 2 pm. For more information, please drop us an email.

Sidespeople

Sidespeople assist with the administration of services, including welcoming people in, collection, and other duties. For more information, please contact Peter Hawkins through the church office.

Servers

Servers assist with the worship at services of Holy Communion. For more information, please contact Simon Patrick.

Tech team

To get our 10 o’clock Sunday service on to Zoom and YouTube, two people sit at the back and control the cameras, microphones and slides. We also need people to prepare the slides. Could you help? Contact Peter Polkinghorne through the church office.

How to Become a Member

Everyone is welcome to worship with us or take part in our activities. But as you get to know us better, you may wish to think about:

  • Baptism: This is (as it was in New Testament times) the formal way in which someone becomes a Christian. You will probably want to learn about the faith first, so that you are ready to make the promises at the ceremony itself, which involves symbolic washing with water at our font and normally takes place during our 10 am Sunday service. Parents can request baptism for their children and make the promises on their behalf.
  • Were you baptised as a child? Would you like to make the promises for yourself now? You can’t be baptised more than once, but you can be confirmed, where you make the promises and the Bishop lays hands on you. Again, you will want to learn about the faith first.
  • Holy Communion: Normally, people are confirmed before they receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We also welcome to communion any visitors who receive communion in their own churches. If you don’t receive communion, you are welcome to come up for a blessing at the time of communion (just keep your hands down and we’ll know you have come for a blessing).
  • Church Electoral Roll: This is our formal list of members, open to members of the Church of England or of a church in communion with it, aged 16 or over, who either live in our parish or have worshipped with us for at least six months. This gives you the right to vote at our annual church meeting. If you’re not sure whether you live in the parish, just tell us where you live and we’ll let you know!
  • Money! We need it to keep the church running, to pay our ministers and to subsidise other churches with smaller congregations. We hope that you will make a donation (and give us an extra 25% by gift-aiding it, if you pay enough income or capital gains tax). If you attend regularly, we would like to invite you to pledge a definite weekly/monthly/annual amount, which you can give us week by week in the collections or by standing order. [See our donations page.]
